How to Maintain a Wood Gate

by | Apr 20, 2017 | Doors & Windows

Have you recently installed a new wood gate? If so, you likely want to keep it looking new for as long as possible. However, wood is more difficult to clean and care for than other materials. As a result, you may need some tips to help you keep your custom wood gates looking great year round.

Clear Dirt and Debris from the Base of the Gate

Make sure to rake any unsightly leaves or other built up debris from around the base of your gate. These can accumulate throughout the year so make sure to do this on a regular basis. If you allow these items to remain on or close to the wood, it can cause the wood to start breaking down and it may begin to decay. Removing these debris will ensure no adverse consequences from prolonged moisture exposure.

Pressure Wash the Gate

Once you have cleared away all the debris and dirt from your fence, you should use a pressure washer to clean any build up that is present. If you don’t have your own pressure washer for cleaning your custom wood gates, then you can rent one. This will help to clean the wood, and open the wood pores, which will prepare it to be stained or treated.

Repair Minor Damage Present

After your fence is clean, take the time to look over the fence and inspect it for signs of damage. Look at the condition of all the boards and check for any loose screws or nails. Also, make sure to look at the hinge on the gate to determine if it is damaged. If there is a problem, repair it now before it has a chance to get worse.

If you are going to invest in custom wood gates, you need to make sure that you protect them with a proper maintenance plan. The tips here will help you do this.
