What To Expect When A Pet Needs Pet Surgery in Fort Wayne Indiana

When a pet needs to go for a surgical procedure, there are steps that should be taken before and afterward to ensure they remain healthy. The veterinarian giving a Pet Surgery in Fort Wayne Indiana will give specific orders pertaining to the particular surgery the pet will be having. However, there are some steps that should be taken regardless of the type of procedure being done. Here are a few of the steps one would want to take to keep a pet safe during and after the surgery.

Adhere To Food Restriction

Many veterinarians will recommend that a pet does not eat for several hours before the surgery is to be administered. This is important for pets who will have anesthesia given to knock them out for the surgery. If food or water is eaten, the pet can gag and choke on their vomit. This is true for most small pets including dogs and cats. One pet that does not need to adhere to this rule is rabbits as they do not have a gag reflex.

Keep Away From Others

After a Pet Surgery in Fort Wayne Indiana is completed, the pet will need some time for healing. The veterinarian may recommend the pet stays in the facility for several hours so it can be monitored frequently to see how it feels after the procedure is done. The veterinarian will be able to administer additional medications to help with nausea, gastrointestinal problems or reactions to anesthesia. When the pet is discharged, the owner should give it a safe place to rest away from other pets and younger family members who may upset it as it is healing.

If the pet is extremely lethargic for a day or two, this is usually normal.  If the pet refuses to eat or drink, acts as if it is in deep pain, or is not acting normally after several days, it should be brought to the surgeon for an evaluation to see if there are additional problems caused by the surgery.
