A Buyer’s Guide to Assault Rifles

Many people are choosing to take advantage of their right to own firearms because of the Second Amendment. Assault rifles are especially popular since they are great for home defense and fun at the range due to being semi-automatic. Some models can also be used for hunting. For those who want to purchase an assault rifle but aren’t sure which one to get, here is an overview of the most popular types.

AR-15 Rifles

The AR-15 has become the top-selling assault rifle, due to coming with so many options. AR-15 rifles are chambered in .223/5.56, which is ideal for home defense, plinking, and varmint hunting. They most commonly use a 30-round magazine. Well-known companies such as Colt, Bushmaster, and Smith & Wesson put out a variety of high-quality AR-15 rifles. AR-style rifles are also made in a few other calibers, such as .300 AAC Blackout.

AK-47 Rifles

Like the AR-15, the AK-47 generally comes with a 30-round magazine, and it is similarly useful for defense, plinking, and some hunting applications. Ammo is affordable as well. Many people choose an AK-47 because it is known for being extremely durable, and because they like the power of the 7.62×39 round that the rifle shoots. Some people may also want to look into the AK-74, a comparable rifle that is chambered in 5.45×39.

AR-10 Rifles

The AR-10 is similar in appearance to the AR-15 but is .308 caliber instead of .223. Its larger and more powerful round means it can be used to hunt deer in addition to defensive use. There are also several .308 semi-auto rifles that are not related to the AR-10, such as the Springfield M1A and the FN SCAR-17.

Pistol Caliber Carbines

Some people decide to go with a pistol caliber carbine that uses the same round as their handgun, generally 9mm. The long barrel and shoulder stock make these rifles easier to shoot than pistols, which is great for home defense. Some models even use the same magazines as popular pistols, including the Glock 17.

Due to how many different Assault rifles are available, some people may wish to rent a few at a gun range to help them decide which rifle they like best. To learn more about renting or purchasing a rifle, contact Knob Creek Gun Range.
