Older Adults Can Maintain Independence and Privacy at Senior Housing communities

Living in a large home with property to maintain can be difficult for older adults to manage after they reach retirement age. Some people may buy a smaller home, or live in a condo or apartment. These smaller spaces can be more manageable, but are not always designed for the needs of aging adults. Senior Housing communities are a good option for older adults who want the security of accessible facilities and available medical care, but who value their independence and privacy.  These communities are often affiliated with nursing and assisted living homes, but allow for seniors to live independently in private residences. Depending on the community, there may be different home packages and amenities available. Some common features of senior home communities are:

1. One floor housing plans. Stairs can be difficult and pose accident risks, so most houses are one level and include wheelchair accessible ramps for easy entry. They have fully functioning kitchens and as many as three bedrooms.

2. Grounds-keeping and maintenance are included. Staff members will take care of shoveling and salting sidewalks and common areas, as well as tending to landscaping and any home maintenance concerns.

3. Community areas such as gardens and auditoriums provide spaces were residents can gather for entertainment and social events with other members of the community. Gyms and pools are also available so they can stay active and dining areas provide casual meals.

4. On-site medical staff is available 24/7 to assist residents who have had an accident or a medical emergency. They can also perform regular check-ins for residents who are recovering from an accident or surgery.

5. Residents may keep a car if they choose, but communities offer shuttle services that go to grocery stores, banks, and other local areas if residents prefer not to drive.

Unlike other senior residence options, Senior Housing communities offer both security and the opportunity for residents to socialize with people their age and meet new friends. Community areas and social events also make these places ideal for visits with friends and family, who can come and have a meal with their relatives or stay with them at their home. Seniors who are interested in transitioning to an independent senior community should check out facilities in their area like Magnolia Springs to find out what these communities can offer them.
