Whether you need square bend U bolts, lag bolts or other types, threading is one of the most important features to consider. Some manufacturers still use thread cutting methods while others employ a process known as thread rolling. So, which is the best choice for your business? Let’s examine both methods to see.
Thread Cutting
In order to cut threads into a solid metal rod, it is placed in a machine and turned while a cutting mechanism literally cuts the threads into the rod. In order to cut threads into a half inch diameter bolt, a half inch rod is used.
Benefits of Cutting Threads
You can cut a wide range of lengths and sizes with this method. Your only limitations may be the machine’s capacity. Every spec can be created by thread cutting. However, the process is time consuming and labor intensive. It may take several passes through the thread cutting machine to get the threads cut to the proper depth. Also, the process works well for single bolts but items like square bend U bolts could be a problem.
Thread Rolling
Instead of cutting threads into rods, the rods are fed through a mechanism which places them against a large roller or rollers that perform the cutting. Smart thread rolling machines work automatically and turn out a large number of pieces per minute. It is much faster than thread cutting and you can create a wide variety of materials including square bend U bolts. Here are additional benefits of rolling:
- Strength – the cold working process produces very strong threads.
- Less likely to strip – rolling does not break down the metal like cutting and this creates increased sheer strength.
- Cost – you can produce more square bend U bolts and all kinds of threaded bolts, when you choose rolling over cutting methods.
