Not everyone can handle the trucker’s way of life, but if it fits you, you’ll get a great deal of enjoyment from your profession. Yes, it’s a way of life more than just a job. Let’s look at some of the things you can expect with OTR trucking jobs so you can decide if the open road is right for you or not.
Do You Have a Family?
Many truckers recommend against driving over the road if you have a family with small children. After all, your job can take you out on the road for a week or more. It’s not easy to find quality family time with those hours. However, for some families, long-distance trucking is the perfect solution. It depends on your schedule and the needs of your family, so it’s not a deal-breaker if you have a family, but you should have a serious talk with them before you consider the job.
Circle of Friends
If you go from working locally to over the road, your circle of friends will gradually change. Most people work nine to five with weekends off, and when you are off work your friends are working and vice versa. However, as you adjust, you’ll find people with the same OTR trucking jobs as you or flexible schedules and your social life could improve.
Solitude
One thing about long haul driving, you get plenty of peace, quiet, and solitude. There’s no one looking over your shoulder and supervising your every move. You are alone much of the time, and if you can’t handle this, you might want to reconsider. However, for most people, the solitude is one of the biggest reasons they have OTR trucking jobs. You get time to think about anything you like, listen to music, and get your thoughts together.
