4 Ways to Fix Your Foggy Headlights

by | Feb 2, 2016 | Automotive

Foggy headlights aren’t the end of the world. So if you see yours heading that way, know that there are plenty of ways for you to fix the problem. You can get DIY kits, though expect these to be nothing more than a temporary patch-up job, says Angie’s List. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for so if you’re going to shell out money for cheap DIY kits, you probably can count on a few days or weeks of use, at most, before you need to fix the problem again.

Starting with Sandpaper
What most professional detailers use to fix foggy headlights is sandpaper. Buy a couple of fine-grain sandpapers, each with different grades. Start with one and rub it over the headlights. This should remove the thin layer of the headlight cover plastic. After taking out that part of the plastic, you’ll need to polish up the surface again. Using another fine grain sandpaper should do the trick. When you’ve got clear headlights on again, apply sealant on the part. Choose one with UV protection to make it more durable, even under constant or regular exposure to the sun. This is especially ideal if you use your car to drive to and from work every day.

Home Remedy 1: Toothpaste
A popular home remedy, though, is toothpaste. While applying it to the headlights works, leading to brighter headlights, this isn’t going to last you a long time. It would also be a waste of your time if you keep using this to fix the problem. For a temporary solution, though, it works particularly if you need to get to somewhere in the next few hours. However, you’ll have to deal with the problem effectively the first chance you get.

Home Remedy 2: Baking Soda and White Vinegar
Another popular home remedy you could try is to mix vinegar and baking soda. Then use a cloth to rub the mixture over your headlights. This helps reduce the oxidization on your headlights. The vinegar helps reduce, if not eliminate, the grime.

Calling a Professional
Another option, certainly one more convenient for you, is to call for the help of professionals. Driving to the nearest auto glass repair shop also works. If you don’t have the time to do a DIY fix, then relying on the help of professionals is your next best move.
