When your windshield gets damaged it is easy to assume that the only option is to replace it, but this is not always the case. In fact, most chips can be repaired, though the quality of the repair will vary depending on the shop that did the repair or if you did it yourself. So, how can you tell if you should replace your windshield or just buy new auto glass in Chicago or your local area?
How Broken Is It?
This is going to be the biggest factor on if you can even repair your windshield. Chips can usually be repaired. These are when you have a small, round-ish divot in the glass. These can easily spread if left alone, so a quick repair is advised.
Cracks, however, cannot be repaired like a chip can. If your windshield is cracked or if the chip spreads then it is too late to repair the windshield, and you will have to have it replaced.
How Long Will It Last?
A properly repaired windshield will last as long as an undamaged one. In fact, in many cases, if the repair is done right then you cannot even tell it has been repaired. This level of success, however, requires an experienced tech to be performing the repair. In most cases, you will be able to tell it has been repaired, but the fix should hold for some years. This does not mean poor jobs will hold, however. A poorly done repair may not work at all. If the resin does not adhere to all areas of the glass, then the chip can spread as easily as if it was never repaired.
Is It Worth It?
If you can repair your windshield, then it is going to be worth it over replacing it. Repairing the old one is much cheaper. True, most insurance companies will replace your windshield if it is damaged, but this can cause your premium to go up, so it is worth a try if nothing else.
