Platelet-Rich Plasma FAQs

by | Apr 6, 2017 | Healthcare

Prp or Platelet-rich plasma injections are a type of outpatient procedure wherein the patient’s blood is drawn and prepared for injection. The treatment is often used to relieve pain and ideal for musculoskeletal treatments of joint areas like the spine, hip, shoulders and knee.

How Long Does It Take?

The procedure normally takes about 45 to 90 minutes to complete. The procedure is non-surgical and low-risk, making it ideal for patients who want immediate and safe pain relief. Injections can be spaced 2 or 3 weeks apart.

Who Performs the Procedure?

An experienced doctor must carry out the procedure. Imaging technology like ultrasound equipment is used to ensure the injections are precise. Precision is vital since the injections must hit the joint capsule site to be effective, says Arthritis Health.

Are There Any Precautions?

Before you undergo the procedure, you will need to refrain from taking in corticosteroid for about 2 to 3 weeks before your scheduled procedure. If you take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or aspiring or arthritis medications like Celebrex, you will need to go off those medications a week before the procedure. Stay away from anti-coagulation drugs for five days before your appointment as well. Basically, taking in blood thinners isn’t a good idea. If you take health supplements, talk to your doctor about whether you can take them or not.

Other Helpful Reminders

Before the PRP or platelet-rich plasma injections, make sure you hydrate. Drink lots of water. If you feel your anxiety rising or if you have a fear of needles and feel anxious or stressed about the procedure, discuss it with your doctor. Your physician can prescribe a mild anti-anxiety drug or even a sedative to help calm you down for the procedure.
