DIY or Shop: 3 Points to Consider

by | Nov 18, 2015 | Auto Repair Shop

If your car’s paint job is starting to show signs of wear and tear, this might be an excellent time to bring back that shiny gleam to your car. Don’t know if you’ll DIY it or take it into the nearest auto paint shop in Denver? Here are a few points from Popular Mechanics to help you figure out what solution fits your situation best:

  1. Have the right tools and supplies ready. This includes sandpaper, the wet and dry kind, along with an electric-powered sander (air-operated works too), spray gun and an air compressor. In addition, get paint thinners, a buffer along with faces masks, an undercoat, safety glasses and a topcoat acrylic. Enamel paint is a good choice too, along with clear-coat lacquer. Then gallons of paint. If you want to make sure you get the exact same shade of your car, find out your color code by checking your car’s compliance plate and give that code to the paint store. If you’re DIYing it, then you’ll need to have all these ready. Of course, that’s where the convenience of going to an auto paint shop is. You won’t have to bother with these. You just bring your car and wait until it’s done.
  2. Be sure you have enough space to work in. For a DIY job, you’ll need to have ample space. A shed would be ideal though you can certainly work out in your back yard. However, if it rains, this could undermine all your painstaking, hard work. So if you don’t have the proper space, it might be better to consider the perks of choosing an auto paint shop instead.
  3. You’ll need time-lots of it. Expect to set aside a lot of your free time, spare hours and weekends combined. That’s because paint jobs are incredibly time-consuming and all the more would be, if you’re doing everything yourself. Sure, you’ve got the tools and you even know what to do-from sanding the car body down to priming it before putting on several coats of the shade you chose. But if you haven’t got the time to invest in the work, and you can’t be sure you can be around for the long haul, it might be better to take your car to the shop instead.

So consider these points carefully. This way, you won’t have to waste time preparing for a DIY paint job project when you might end up picking the paint shop anyway.
