The company employs porters who are ‘runners’ that transport goods for the trail guides. Many of the porters are fathers in the local community. Alpaca Expeditions is committed to cultural education to each client and has even committed to planting trees in the area that are hard to find. Many locals are farmers and herders of alpacas or sheep and have trouble growing enough food in the local climate to sustain their families especially when the weather prevents them from leaving the remote area. They need income to purchase other foods to get them through the periods of inclement weather or slow growth. Alpaca Expeditions helps a different village each year by donating school supplies and basic personal hygiene products. The company offers a livable wage for guides and employs local Peruvians.
