Take some time and sit down to talk with current employees of long haul trucking companies, if you can. This is the best way to figure out how the company treats its workers. Ask about any benefits that are offered. Ask about home time and the schedule that they follow with the company. Getting information from a worker will help you decide exactly which companies are a good fit, and which you should avoid.
Bring Truck Home
Believe it or not, being able to take your truck home in between trips is a major benefit that’s worth looking for. It means that you don’t have to waste your free time driving back to the facility all the time when you’re off. Instead, you can simply head straight home and start enjoying time with your family and loved ones. If a company allows drivers to bring their trucks home most of the time, this is a company worth considering.
Focused Driver Managers
Some long haul trucking companies take a scattered and unorganized approach to their drivers. They have a couple people trying to figure out the schedules for all their dozens or even hundreds of drivers in some instances. That just isn’t going to do it. The best companies rely on dedicated driver managers. These guys oversee a much smaller pool of drivers and help work out schedules that fit the drivers’ lives and help them enjoy work more.
Not all long haul trucking companies offer poor working conditions or pay. Many offer excellent conditions with the perks that you want. You just have to be willing to take the time to seek out these places, and avoid rushing into a job that could be negative if you aren’t careful.
